Alice in Wonderland Party

Since my book club is reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland this month, I decided to write a post on how to create an Alice in Wonderland party. Below are some tips and ideas for decorations, entertainment, games, goodies, and food for a Mad party!

Decorations – Use bright colors and floral patterns. Buy yards of fabric with these designs to use as a table cloth or table runner. Decorate the table with a floral tea set or Alice in Wonderland tea set. Set out vases of roses or colored candles. Old teapots can serve as flower vases, or just as decoration. You can also buy cheap tea cups from thrift stores and stack them together for a centerpeice. If you dont plan on using them again, glue them together using super glue so they dont fall when you set them out.

Stick playing cards in floral arrangements, or use as place settings so guests know where to sit. You can also decorate using tissue paper balls which you hang above the table.  A bubble machine adds to the whimsy! Bright colored hats placed around also creates a “Mad Hatter” type feel to the party. If you’re doing more of a “Queen of Hearts” theme, use red roses, playing cards, and paper hearts as decorations. You can also use white roses that you “attempt” to paint red like in the movie, by dripping some red paint on them and letting dry before placing on the table. Lots of black and red colored plates/napkins and tablecloths should be used on the table. Even old and unusual keys hanging around, too will create the Wonderland feel.

For your yard, hang a Mad Hatter birdhouse, Cheshire Cat Windchime, Plastic Flamingos, or plant flowers into these teacup planters!

Food – Red velvet cupcakes will go nicely for the Queen of Hearts, otherwise use strawberry cupcakes for the Mad Hatter, or make these cute Cheshire Cat cupcakes. Stores now have flavored icing for cakes like cotton candy and white chocolate raspberry, so you can create unique tastes for your cupcakes, too! Decorate using colored sprinkles or print out these cupcake toppers. Make edible teacups, sprinkle cookies, and sugar plum pops. You can also create drinks using sparkling water and fruity juices, add them to glasses, and tie a tag around them that says “Drink Me.” Create simple sugar cookies, like stars and hearts, and decorate with colored icing. Pipe the words “Eat Me” onto the cookies, to create the same “cakes” that Alice eats during the books and movies.

Any food thats colorful or that you can decorate whimsical like will fit your tea party perfectly. Strawberries covered in chocolate are good, too! Of course, dont forget the tea! Use these cute flamingo straws! For regular meals, try soups in colored bowls, or simple sandwiches! Finger food is always best for dainty parties such as these!

Entertainment – The Alice in Wonderland (cartoon or real life) soundtrack will sound great in the background of your party. You can also play some classical music, but I think its best to stick with the Alice soundtracks.

You can watch the Alice in Wonderland movies after your party, or have an Alice themed scavenger hunt! See if you can find flowers, caterpillars, mushrooms, cats, and more and then win Alice themed prizes, like the Alice book, movies, or poster! Create a mini Flamingo Croquet game to play with your friends, or create playing card men from the Queen of Heart’s court!

Have a hat decorating contest and see who can come up with the most creative hat, or have everyone dress up as their favorite character and sing the Un-Birthday song! Buy a Mad Hatter hat!

Goodies – For goodie bags, create any of the projects here to give out to guests. If doing the Queen of Hearts theme, give everyone a deck of cards, a real red rose, and their own mini croquet game, if you wish to make one for everyone. For the Mad Hatter theme, give them homemade shrink plastic charm bracelets, and tea cup rings. You can also make clay mushrooms and turn them into charms or just little good luck pocket friends! With polymer clay you can also make your own small tea cups, which can be made into necklace charms. Give out the Alice in Wonderland plush set, Alice Buttons, or Bookmarks, too! Ideas are limitless!

These ideas are just the beginning! You can use your imagination to create a party as wonderous and unique as the movies! Do you have any other ideas for an Alice in Wonderland party or links for recipes and crafts? Share below!

  1. Creative ideas! One more tip for entertainment: asking riddles! It could be especially fun when the one who asks comes up with a crazy question, not knowing the answer, and all guesses are welcome, the more interesting, the better.
Also, every guest should draw their fave character so an exhibition of these drawings can be organised.
Or when the guests are more into writing, everyone can write a poem as mad as they can.
Oh, and caucus race! Of course everyone gets a price.
I hope You have fun organising Your party and we can all see photos of it!
    Thanks!

  2. Well done!

  3. Oh dear, very cute ideas! I like those kind of colors on the photo of table decoration…

  4. I like your party idea. I wish I had time to try it out myself.
I would like to eat one of these strawberry cupcakes right now, yummy.

  5. Hey bluemorpho, I like your blog and keep visiting it regularly. Its an inspiration for me. Even I want to be part of such a book club that reads fantasy. What book club are u part of?

    • Hi there! Thanks for your comment. I started a book club back in January for people on the Postcrossing Forum, so it is a “Postcrossing Member” only club, unfortunately. Of course, we don’t always read fantasy. What we read depends on what book has the most votes. :)

Glad you like my blog! :)
