I had put this book on hold at the library soon after it came out, and after waiting weeks I finally got to pick it up yesterday. I started it this morning, and finished it this afternoon. I was totally engrossed in this book. Its amazing to read about a past president and to find out a story like this. It really makes you question the lives and the faithfulness of our presidents, past or future. As an American History geek, I know that most of our presidents have had affairs, but to hear a personal account, especially one like this where you see a different side to Kennedy than most saw on TV when he was president, is really shocking. To think that the president would practically throw himself on and take advantage of a young girl and then continue to sleep with her while his wife was away as well as make her do other sexual acts is somewhat sickening. It’s not unfathomable (people in this world do crazy things), just sickening. Even more sickening to think white house staff knew about it and did nothing. I cant imagine all the things that were going through her head at the time, but I certainly would consider the incident rape, regardless of the fact that Mimi continued the affair, or that she was okay with it. She was swept away by his charm and power and the fact that he was attracted to her, and in reality who could blame her? But the relationship, in my book, was and is far from normal. You’ll just have to read the book to understand more about the affair and Mimi’s thoughts on it.
The book was a good and short read, that I’d definitely recommend to others. Perfect for any JFK fan (who may not be a fan after reading this book), history lover, or auto-biography bookworms.
